Thirty years later, the case appears to be solved and one man — Chester McKnight — is in jail serving 20 years to life for their murders.

Greg Schultz was just two weeks shy of his 21st birthday when his brother disappeared. Being the closest in age to Todd out of all four siblings, the two grew up and did everything together. Although Schultz says that the investigation was botched from the beginning and that he holds no animosity towards Johnston and feels justice has been served, he also believes that Johnston played a role in hindering the investigation. Speaking about the investigation which was conducted, Schultz said that he understands why Johnston was zeroed in on as the primary suspect.

Were they objective? Schultz disagrees with a few things in a book published this summer that goes into great detail about the murders and subsequent investigation. The book alleges that Todd and Cooper were at a home in West Logan that night to purchase marijuana, which Greg Schultz says is a complete falsehood.

Erich, who was eight years younger than Todd, can remember hearing stories about how Todd would be given a beer at a party, but would take it into the kitchen and slowly pour it down the drain. He was a pretty square kid when it came to that stuff.

Erich said that he made sure to print his name underneath his signature on the paperwork before giving it to Linscott so that he could see who he was, though.

Although Linscott originally faced three charges of aggravated murder, each of which carried death-penalty specifications for his involvement, he pleaded guilty to a first-degree misdemeanor of abusing a corpse in June Since Linscott had been in jail since September and had served more than six months in jail, he was subsequently released.

According to Greg, the prosecution was afraid that if they took Linscott to trial that they might lose. Until that day, Laney's story will remain on this site. There is a slight chill in the air as the smiling self-assured detective approaches me, hand outstretched.

Now we stand face to face for the first time just outside the Resolutions building in Butler County, Ohio. As he ushers me into his office I am immediately greeted by an array of photographs of faces that form a horizontal line spanning the entire length of the stark white wall just to my left. Each photograph displayed has a name typed in bold print directly below it. A shorter second horizontal line of photographs begins directly underneath the first row.

I notice immediately that none of these photos bears a name. Positioned directly beneath the rows of photos there are two giant pieces of poster board joined together that display a map that appears to be a portion of the Ohio River. As I look to my right I see an enormous poster size photograph of a beautiful young woman with a beaming smile, long thick brown hair, and eyes that sparkle.

Immediately I recognize the woman in the photograph. Her body language, captured forever in that photograph, says that at that moment the picture was snapped she was relaxed and at peace, worry free, care free. Her beautiful smile and twinkling eyes are so full of contentment and joy, so utterly unaware of the great danger and of the tragedy that lies just a few short hours ahead.
